Associate Opinion Editor

Serve as a shepherd and caretaker for Crosscut’s Op-ed contributions, collaborating with the senior editorial team to plan and deliver a steady stream of opinion/editorial content on the organizations primary distribution channels. CPM aims to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation in pursuit of reaching a broad and diverse audience, and creating a bright future for public media in our increasingly digital world.



I Lead  

  1. Working alongside the newsroom senior editor staff to help influence the overall growth of the Crosscut Opinion section audience engagement strategies for our nonprofit public media newsroom
  2. Serve as primary interface between Crosscut’s newsroom and regular Op-ed contributors to plan, schedule, produce and publish bulk of organization’s Opinion-related content
  3. Grow stable of new voices and contributors available within Crosscut’s vast network, focusing on diversity of perspective, inclusiveness and background to reflect the evolving communities we serve and the Op-ed pieces that are cleared for publishing

II Planning 

  1. Conduct in-depth research/interviews to develop distinctive Op-ed issue ideas on various topics
  2. Pitch enterprise stories and multimedia projects that engage Crosscut audiences across multiple channels
  3. Display keen judgment, able to identify relevant and enterprise topics to compel and maintain a strong sense of keeping Crosscut’s Opinion section timely and ahead of the curve
  4. Enterprise and develop issues-based leads via independent sources, community awareness and social listening practices

III Community Impact 

  1. Develop a network of contacts in the community that can help identify issues, rising voices and civic dialogue opportunities that are not being sufficiently covered by other media outlets
  2. Serve as a Crosscut representative at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings
  3. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business or a related field or equivalent experience required; advanced study or a graduate degree preferred
  2. At least two years of experience as a writer or editor in a deadline-oriented environment
  3. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities and in developing and managing projects
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships
  6. Ability to continuously improve processes and systems
  7. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  8. Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred


  1. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  2. Ability to work a varied schedule, including evening, weekends and some holidays required
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
